Drainage
An efficient drainage system for management of water is an important feature for achieving complete solution and long-term performance of any project. Drainage means either natural or artificial removal of surface and sub-surface water from an area. Water itself and pore water pressure play an important role in any civil engineering design, effective drainage system and solutions are necessary for safety and better performance of the structures.
Considering the importance of drainage and its huge potential, Geoquest Products have begun working on developing efficient solutions around drainage with product lines like Draintube™ drainage geocomposite, cellular drainage geocomposites applicable as per site situations.

Drainage Under Railway
The installation of a drainage system under railways solves many problems that can be encountered.
On compressible soils, the DRAINTUBE FTF geocomposite evacuates the water from soil consolidation. It is often used in addition to vertical drains.
In cuttings, DRAINTUBE FTF helps to drawdown the water table and prevents groundwater from rising in the structure.
Placed between the infrastructure and the sub-ballast, DRAINTUBE FTF collects the water infiltrated under the railways or acces roads, and drains it towards the collection trenches or ditches on the sides.
Placed between the sub-ballast and the ballast, DRAINTUBE FTF compensates for the loss of hydraulic conductivity of the ballast due to its densification and degradation over time, and increases the drainage capacity of the entire system
Benefits
- Efficient drainage and filtration of the infrastructure even under heavy loads
- Use in cuttings and compressible areas in addition to vertical drains
- Increase of the long-term drainage capacity of the ballast
- Reduction of the construction time
- Easy installation with a single product to unroll
- Cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution as it replaces granular layers

- Filtration
- Mechanical Protection
Drainage behind Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) wall
Efficient drainage behind MSE walls is essential to isolate the reinforced soil structure from possible water infiltrations and thus preserve the geotechnical characteristics of the backfill material. Indeed, 70% of retaining walls failures are due to absent or deficient drainage system.
The DRAINTUBE FTF geocomposite drains the incoming groundwater at the interface between the reinforced soil structure and the infrastructure. It has a high and stable over time drainage capacity, even under heavy loads. This allows it to be used behind important MSE wall heights.
Depending on the project (height of the wall, slope, etc.), the geocomposite can be installed in two ways:
- Installation from the toe of the slope
- Installation from the top of the slope
DRAINTUBE FTF replaces the traditional granular drainage layer and the filtration geotextiles with a single product easy to install.
Benefits
- Efficient Drainage and Filtration of the groundwater even under high loads
- Hydraulic protection of the reinforced soil structure
- Proven efficiency
- Reduction of the construction time
- Easy installation with a single product to unroll
- Cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution as it replaces granular layers

Tunnel Wall Drainage
Extrados drainage of underground structures such as cut and cover tunnels, limits the hydraulic head on the structure and prevents water infiltration.
Installed on the waterproofing system, DRAINTUBE combines the three functions: filtration, drainage and mechanical protection in a single product and a single installation. It replaces the protection geotextile, the drainage layer made of granular material, and the filtration geotextiles.
DRAINTUBE has a high and stable over time drainage capacity, even under heavy loads. This allows it to be used under high embankments.
Benefits
- High drainage capacity under heavy loads
- Drainage of the groundwater
- Mechanical protection of the waterproofing system
- Improvement of the performance of the waterproofing system by limiting the hydraulic head on it
- Easy installation with a single product to unroll
- Cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution as it replaces granular layers

Road Foundation Drainage
For years stone aggregates have been used to provide drainage for roadways. DRAINTUBE™ offers an effective alternative to stone aggregates while at the same time offering many advantages:
Significant cost reductions,
Faster construction,
Less excavation and/or backfill, Better performance,
Lower greenhouse gas emissions
